Behind the "Menu Hari Ini"

About a week ago i got an assignment from my lecturer to write down my interpretation (appreciation) of an installation art. There are lots of installation arts in my campus, and i just needed to pick up one. So i picked up the most 'simple' one entitled "Menu Hari Ini" by Iriantine Karnaya. Here's the picture:

The reason why i chose this installation is that because it looks simple, don't you think? It consists of 4 giant bowls (or plates?) and a smaller one in the middle. Each bowl's filled with replica of food. One consists of some kind of noodle, beef & mushroom, one with pasta, others are filled of macaronis, beans, mushrooms, or just by a sunny side egg. "What so simple! Maybe the interpretation of the purpose would be simple too!" Well, that was what i thought. But when we finally discussed it's meaning in the class, turned out that it's not as easy as what i thought -__-.

When i first saw this installation, i had this in my mind: "ah.. it must be the menus of Kansas," since it was located near with FIB canteen, Kansas. But i was not sure with that so I googled this thing up and i found some articles about this installation. In those articles mentioned that this installation was made by a lecturer of Engineering Faculty named Iriantine Karyana. How come an engineering lecturer become an artist? well, actually she was graduated under fine art department. The installation was first known in one of her solo exhibition. If you google it up, you will find those articles mainly talk about the theme of the exhibition which was full of "mushrooms".  Having read those articles, I knew that the installation was a form of Iriantine's concern over the situation in this country. She's kind of giving a critique towards people's consumerism habit (especially for information/news/gossip). I also added that the bowls are metaphors of information that is consumed by people . I was 70% sure that my interpretation is correct.
But unfortunately, sadly, pathetically, I was wrong. I was too focused to the "mushroom" part that i forgot the installation was no longer in an exhibition, means that the meaning has changed (can it?). it's located right at Klaster (kelas terbuka), not in an exhibition's room. I quoted the article without paying attention that it talks about theme of the exhibition, not merely the installation. In the end, my lecturer (whom i always forget the name) pointed that Iriantine made this installation to critique people's habit, yes, but she also urges people (or students in this case) to make something different. A change, an innovation. Remember I mentioned about the filling of the bowls? about sunny side eggs? Well, in relation to it, maybe what Iriantine wanted to say is like "hey, you really wanna eat those sunny eggs every day? oh come on! Get up and make something different! Make food that you've never eaten. A delicious food such as pasta, perhaps?!"
So, basically the meaning of the installation is very powerful, not just a reminder of canteen's menu as what i thought. Indeed, as what Iriantine trying to say, we have to move, we have to be creative, we have to be brave to make some changes. And the urge should become stronger since we are students of colleges. We are the agents of change, so keep doing, keep trying, keep experimenting in order to invent a new resolution for a better civilization! *hoek*
